[edit] Inputs

  • Winnov Videum 4400VO
    • Windows-only? (double check this)
  • IEI IVC-200
    • Needs drivers for Windows (file is ivc.rar on archer - this was a relatively huge pain to get since we apparently lost the cd. keep this one), works out of the box in Linux

[edit] Mixers

  • (for the future - we don't have this yet) Cesstron -- video control-panel, like what they use in the CoS Auditorium.
    • Where/how would we use this exactly?

[edit] Codecs

We should start using something that...

  • We can encode to
  • Anyone can play with VLC
  • Doesn't have any patent/royalty issues
    • Basically this means anything MPEG is totally out...

[edit] List of Codecs

  • H.261
  • MPEG-4 part 2 (Xvid, etc.)
  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
  • DV/HDV (extended video services/DVTS)

[edit] Transmitting DV across long distances

hi hubert,

how are you doing?

i have a question: i recall you were sending DV streams from various rooms back to a head end facility. my question is how do you transport the DV stream over distances longer than a firewire cable? (in fact, how long a firewire cable can you send the signal?). i'd like to use DV cams in a single room to go back to the computer for DVTS, so up to about 50 feet is what i need. any suggestions?

Hi Gurcharan,

I use analog fiber connections. I've installed fiber transmitters in about 25 rooms on campus. The analog video is sent back to the computer center, converted back into copper audio and video, and then fed into an AV switcher. I use Fiber Options fiber video cards.

So, whenever we have an event, I can just route the appropriate room to my transcoding equipment and go.

For 50 feet, I would just use long coax and balanced audio for the analog AV signals. Then convert close to the computer using a converter box or DV input card like the AceDVio card from Canopus. Here is a vendor: http://www.academicsuperstore.com/item/?tname=246208&title=AceDVio

I think videonics makes a 10 meter (30ft) firewire cable... yep: [1]

Best, Hubert
